Athens-Clarke County is exploring public transit as an option for carrying commuters into metro Atlanta. Local officials on May 16 agreed to accept nearly $600,000 of grant funding from the Transit Trust Fund Program, which Georgia Department of Transportation rolled out this year to help small transit agencies beef up their networks. The county plans to use most of those funds to identify a potential bus route to link the metro areas in hope of eventually launching a pilot program. One idea is running buses along Georgia 316 from Athens to MARTA's Doraville station, which would allow passengers to connect to the heavy rail network or hop on a Ride Gwinnett bus.
